The forerunner of the laser is conceived and built. The American physicist Charles H. Townes, and Soviet physicists Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov & Nikolai Gennadiyevich Basov, independently suggest a way of inducing molecules to emit intense, coherent microwaves. Townes (left) goes on to build and name the first maser (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation).
