The first commercial electronic computer is built. The American engineers John Mauchly & John Eckert construct UNIVAC I, with 5,000 vacuum tubes and data storage on magnetic tape. In 1952 a UNIVAC computer compiles polling results that anticipate the result of the election of U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower.
