A quantum method is developed to calculate the mechanical properties of metal.

The Hungarian-born American physicist Eugene Wigner, and his graduate student, the American physicist Frederick Seitz, develop a calculational method that uses quantum physics to find the energies of electrons in a metal. The Wigner-Seitz technique is instrumental in opening up matter in the solid state to further study.
