Infrared light probes the size and structure of molecules.

Infrared light probes the size and structure of molecules. The American physicist Elmer Samuel Imes, at Fisk University, makes the first accurate measurement of distances between atoms in a molecule. His infrared spectra of HCl, HBr, and HF support quantum theory and reveal that chlorine occurs in two forms with different atomic masses.
