The cosmic background radiation is explored.

The cosmic background radiation is explored. NASA launches the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite in 1989. It records maps of minute variations in thermal radiation, represented by different colors, across the sky. Contributions from the Milky Way, included in the upper background image, have been eliminated in the lower image to reveal ripples in the thermal radiation left over from the Big Bang.
