Pulsars are discovered, and interpreted as neutron stars. In England, graduate student Jocelyn Bell & her adviser Anthony Hewish discover periodic radio pulses from certain stars. The American astrophysicist Thomas Gold proposes that these pulsars are rotating neutron stars, the dense remnants of supernova explosions.
