The fundamental forces begin to be unified.

The fundamental forces begin to be unified. The American physicists Steven Weinberg (right) & Sheldon Glashow (left), and Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam (center) independently create the electroweak theory, which unites the apparently different electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces into a single "electroweak" force. A key prediction of this theory is confirmed in 1983 with the discovery of the heavy W and Z bosons, carriers of the weak force, by the Italian physicist Carlo Rubbia and his research team. (Above, three laureates are about to receive the 1979 Nobel prize.)
