The theory of plate tectonics is developed.

The theory of plate tectonics is developed. The British geophysicists Dan McKenzie & Robert Parker, and the American geophysicist W. Jason Morgan independently describe Earth's crust as divided into enormous moving plates. The theory explains mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes, and is consistent with continental drift, which Alfred Wegener introduced in 1915.
