Quasars are discovered.

Quasars are discovered. The Dutch-American astronomer Maarten Schmidt analyzes the red shifted light emitted by astronomical object 3C 273 and shows it to be extremely distant. This is the first known quasar, an object that looks star-like but is brighter than some galaxies. Quasars may be associated with giant black holes.
