Radioactivity is discovered, and radium is isolated. In 1896, the French physicist Henri Becquerel discovers that uranium emits a penetrating radiation. Two years later, his colleagues Marie & Pierre Curie (above) begin to isolate radium, with its positive (alpha), negative (beta) and neutral (gamma) radioactive emissions.
